UBET Release Early Markets for SA's $1 Million Races

UBET, the official wagering partner of Thoroughbred Racing SA has just released early markets for the state’s first $1 million Group One races, the UBET Classic (Robert Sangster Stakes) and the Darley Goodwood.

The Group One UBET Classic will be run on Schweppes Oaks Day, Saturday 6 May and the bookies think a strong field will assemble to etch their names in SA thoroughbred racing history.

The Hayes’ & Dabernig trained Sheidel has been installed as early $7 favourite for the UBET Classic (Fillies & Mares only) after running second behind Precious Gem in this race last year and 7th in the Goodwood. The two times Group 3 winner was last seen running second to Takedown in the Group One Winterbottom Stakes at Ascot.

Group One winning mare, English is next in the line of betting at $8 and if she salutes will be master trainer, Gai Waterhouse’s second UBET Classic after Driefontein won in 2014. Also at $8 is Group 2 winner Heatherly who was last seen running second behind Extreme Choice in the Group One Moir Stakes at Mooney Valley. Finally, the Ciaron Maher trained Petits Filous is back for her second crack at the UBET Classic after running an uncharacteristic 13th in the race last year.

The Group One, Darley Goodwood will be run on Saturday 20 May and last year’s winner Black Heart Bart is the $7 favourite to go back to back although no horse has won back to back Goodwood’s since Musket Belle in 1911/1912.

Black Heart Bart is a deserved favourite with 12 black type wins under his belt including three Group One wins including last year’s Underwood Stakes at Caulfied and of course has the Darren Weir polish.

Two horses sit on the second line of betting at $8.50 and are both trained by Peter Gelagotis. Group Two winner, Illustrious Lad loves racing at Morphettville winning four out of the five races he has contested in here and the in-form Malaguerra who has won nine of his last fifteen starts.

The last horse to do the Sangster-Goodwood double was the Darren Weir trained Platelet in 2013, the year after wonder mare Black Caviar achieved the same feat in 2012.
