Locals Look to Cause Goodwood Upset

Black Heart Bart may be the hot favourite for Saturday’s $1 Million Group 1 Darley Goodwood but there will be five locally trained sprinters hoping to cause an upset and become the first local to win the Goodwood since the David Jolly trained Zip Zip Aray in 2002.

#4 Hey Doc T: Tony McEvoy J: Luke Currie - UBET: $21

Hey Doc was last seen in the Group 1 Doncaster where he ran ninth behind It’s Somewhat on heavy ground. Before that he gave trainer Tony McEvoy his first Group 1 win in the Australian Guineas at Flemington. While he has had more success over longer trips, he has won one race over the 1200m from four starts.

Trainer Tony McEvoy said “I felt fantastic in the horse until the barrier draw, which wasn’t great. It will mean that he has to go back and will have to give the others a start and he’s run his best when he’s sat in the first half previously.

He’s a really good horse that is ready to take the step to Group 1 races at this distance but the barrier hasn’t been kind to us on Saturday.”

#9 Karacatis T: Richard Jolly J: Noel Callow – UBET: $61

Karacatis has turned back the clock this year winning three of his last six races including the Group 3 McKay Stakes in his last start. He has competed in two Group 1 Goodwood’s back in 2013 (4th) and 2014 (6th) and finds himself well and truly in the contest on his recent form.

Trainer Richard Jolly said “He’s in good form and doesn’t know his age at the moment. The wide draw hurts his chances but if he can get across from the wide gate and find a nice spot he can run a good race.”

#12 Riziz T: Ken Sweeney L: Todd Pannell – UBET: $81

Eight-year-old Riziz took his career prizemoney to over $1 million with his win in the Listed City of Adelaide at the end of April. This will be his fourth appearance in the Group 1 Goodwood and his best finish was a third behind Smokin’ Joey and Platelet in the 2014 edition.

Trained Ken Sweeney said “I’m very happy for him to be there. It’s going to be tough but he’s in great form and he’s got a shot. He’s really earnt his stripes.”

#14 Casino Wizard T: Lee Creek J: Jason Holder - UBET: $51

Casino Wizard has a great record at the Morphettville 1200m with four wins from ten starts including two Listed wins. He took out the Listed Matrice on Adelaide Cup Day and has since never been more than two lengths off the winner in his last three starts.

Trainer Lee Creek said “He deserves his spot in the field after back to back Stakes wins earlier on. He’s just a really underrated horse and if he was trained in the city I think it would be a different matter. I think he’s a genuine Top 10 chance.”

#22 Lope De Capio T: Wayne Francis & Glen Kent J: Jamie Kah UBET: $101

Four-year-old Lope De Capio has gained a start in the Group1 Goodwood after the scratching of Karlovasi. This will be the biggest test of the gelding’s career and while he doesn’t have a black-type win to his name he has run second twice in Listed races over the 1200m at Morphettville. Co-trainer Wayne Francis was the owner of the 2002 Goodwood winner Zip Zip Aray and will be hoping he has two Goodwood trophies in the cabinet tomorrow evening.

Co-trainer Wayne Francis said “He’s come up well. We’ve had him in line for the Goodwood for six months now and we’re happy to throw our hat in the ring. I’m always a believer that if you’re not in it, you can’t win it!”
