Numerous chances in the Naracoorte Cup

In one of the most even Naracoorte Cups in recent times, all runners look a genuine chance of victory in Sunday’s feature. Seven of the twelve runners on Sunday have won at the track while six of the runners have won over the distance. With a myriad of form lines coming into Sunday’s Cup it could be anyone’s race.

The top weight Mista Holyfield has only had four runs since last year’s Naracoorte Cup but has hit some great form this preparation as he keeps stepping out in distance. He produced a strong run from the tail to win last start at Murray Bridge and top jockey Jason Holder makes a rare trip to the South East to take the ride in the Cup. Off his last run, the 2000m looks ideal and with Holder on board looks a massive chance on Sunday.

Victorian visitor Finn McCool has had a great campaign on the Country Cup circuit with third placings in the Bordertown and Great Western Cups and a victory in the Penshurst Cup. Fellow Victorian Reset Me I'm Wild just missed out on a last start win behind Aagas at Morphettville in BM82 company. Dom Tourneur sticks with the five-year-old from the Richard Laming stable.

No surprises that Naracoorte local Sue Jaensch has a strong hand in her hometown Cup with three runners. Last start winner, Strategic Glass has a fantastic record on his home track and the 2000m should suit him perfectly while Costa Lante claimed the Bordertown Cup over the same trip in December. Jarrod Lorensini teams up once again with the mare after that Cup victory. Her final runner, Pass the Glass comes out of the race at Murray Bridge which Mista Holyfield won last start. She was one of the race favourites that day but only managed to run fifth. She's one from one over the 2000m and should enjoy jumping from barrier 2 on Sunday.

Five starts back Cuban Fighter contested the Group 2 Adelaide Cup and he made his return to the track in the Camperdown Cup last month over the mile. His best distance looks to be over a mile and a half and while this may be one of the easier races he’s contested recently, it looks like he might need a touch further than the 2000m on Sunday.

There are a number of Naracoorte track specialists lining up in Sunday’s Cup. Richard Nicholson’s Dyagliev is undefeated in two starts at the track while Peter Hardacre’s Centenary Shot has won three from four and ran second on the other occasion. While these two runners may be outsiders in the field, you always have to give the track specialists a chance in a big race.

Finally, 2016 Naracoorte Cup winner and 2018 Runner-up Hasta La Thomas is out to break a 15 month drought as he lines up in his third Naracoorte Cup. While it’s been a long time between drinks, he has an outstanding record at the track and distance and his jockey is in red hot form. Chris Caserta is coming off four winners in a day at Morphettville on Wednesday and only carrying 54kg could be a serious threat in his 51st career start.
