SA Bred Youngsters Shooting for SABOIS Bounty

Saturday’s Morphettville card will be headlined by two $100k SABOIS races for our locally bred, upcoming two and three year olds.

The two-year-olds are the first cab off the rank in Race 3 with twelve runners set to take their place in the field.

With many of the starters only having one career start, Will Clarken’s runner Iscariot is the only horse with a win to its name. He won his debut race at Gawler in May recording a pretty comfortable one length win. He returns to the races having six weeks off with the in-form Todd Pannell in the saddle.

Santorini Summer, the Victorian visitor from the Mark Kavanagh stable was runner up here on debut behind Magic Phantom, just missing victory by a neck. Jockey Joe Bowditch returns from Melbourne to take the ride for Kavanagh. He’s had a pretty good season with 40 wins to his name after heading across the border to continue his association with the Lloyd Kennewell stable.

Gordon Richards has two runners in Garner and Sheza Little Posh. Garner was runner-up to That Girl on debut while Sheza Little Posh ran second to the talented Sizzlefly on debut back in January. While she ran second that day, she was still eight lengths off the winner who has since had another win across the border and a metropolitan second placing. If she can run up to that debut effort she looks a chance in a very even race.

Raquel Clark will be hoping her mount Bless It Be can go one better than last start where she finished second to the impressive Westport at Balaklava. Clark is four wins ahead of Jamie Kah and six ahead of Todd Pannell in the Metropolitan Jockey Premiership and will be hoping to add another win to her name for her bosses Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas.

Bless It Be beat home Air Marshal in that Balaklava maiden last month but the Richard & Chantelle Jolly trained gelding was running home very strongly under the guidance of Caitlin Jones. She takes the ride again for the Jolly’s and has been in fantastic form since her return to riding a few months ago.

The three-year-olds step out in Race 7 in what looks like a very deep race with eight of the fifteen runners filling the placings in their last start.

The race features four Jolly trained runners, two for David and two for Richard & Chantelle. Regalo Di Gaetano has won three on the trot for Richard & Chantelle and will start the race as favourite, most recently claiming a narrow win a month ago over Tony McEvoy’s Blow Torch. Their second runner Bayou was also a last start winner on this track and the filly has an imposing record around Morphettville with two wins and three placings from six starts.

Raquel Clark teams up with her bosses once again aboard Counter Drive who is aiming for a hat trick of wins on Saturday. The gelding finally broke his maiden two starts back and hasn’t looked back since, recording a two length win last start.

Kyneton based George Osborne brings his consistent runner across the border for a crack at the SABOIS prizemoney and will be joined by talented apprentice Jess Eaton. The gelding smashed his rivals by over five lengths two starts ago at his home track before running third last start at Albury. He drops down in the weights off his last two runs and will be a good chance on Saturday.

Left Hand Man has contested much tougher races than this in his short career and his fifth behind future listed winner Vinland looks good on paper. He was less than a length off Vinland that day and he drops back in distance on Saturday which could be a positive for a horse that is usually up on the speed.

While Rizski is still a maiden, the Ken Sweeney runner looks like he’s so close to that first victory after four seconds and two thirds from his fourteen starts. He’s been runner-up in three of his last five starts and was less than a length away from Counter Drive two starts back. The extra 200m to travel on Saturday, looks like it will suit him nicely and if he can jump well from the wide barrier could certainly celebrate win number one.
