October long weekend at the Jamestown Cup

After years of being held on the same day as the AFL Grand Final, the Jamestown Cup finally gets main billing this October long weekend and we can guarantee the road trip to attend Cup day is worth every kilometre.

From the Adelaide CBD it's just under a three hour drive to Jamestown which is home to some of our state’s most productive agricultural land. So sneak out of work a tad early on the Friday and make the trip up to the state's mid north. With plenty of hotels, hotels, BnB's and a caravan park in town, you're sure to find a place to rest your head ready for a big weekend.

Kick-start Cup day with a bite to eat at one of the local cafes or go with the tried and true method of a pit stop at the local Jamestown Bakery which has been operating since 1880!

Cup day is just the start of a huge weekend for the town which then plays host to the annual Jamestown Show on Sunday and Monday. The normal sleepy town will be abuzz with visitors for the whole three days and the Show alone attracts between 5-6 thousand visitors over the two days.
For those making the trip away with the kids, a visit to a country show is a must and admission is only $12 for Adults and $6 for kids.

On route to the track make sure you pay homage to the man who is probably dressing 75% of the crowd trackside, R. M Williams. Williams was born on the outskirts of Jamestown in 1908 and went on to become one of the most iconic footwear and clothing manufactures in all of Australia. To get a bit of background on the great man, his upbringing and how he became the nation's most famous rural clothing manufacturer check out the Interpretative Display located in Memorial Park.

After backing a couple winners at the races, make sure you head back into town to spend your winnings over the bar at one of the local watering holes. You simply can't beat the atmosphere of the local pub after Cup day and you can rest assured the pub grub will be top notch.

After a good night’s sleep, make sure you are up and about early to make your way back towards one of the most famous wine region's in the country, the Clare Valley.

On your way into town be sure to stop at one or both of Mad Bastard or Jim Barry Wines. Both wineries produce some of the world's best Riesling and what they don't know about the variety is simply not worth knowing.

Book yourself a night in or around Clare for the night but in the afternoon, make sure you head on down to beautiful town of Sevenhill where you will find one of the best collaborations since Aerosmith teamed up with Run DMC.

Open for just over a year, the Clare Valley Brewing Company along with Jeanneret Wines have combined forces to create a Cellar Door that both beer and wine drinkers will absolutely love!

The two producers are some of the best in the state and the Cellar Door, beautifully nestled amongst the native Australian vegetation, is the perfect location to sip away a lazy Sunday afternoon.

While you're nearby, you may as well pop into one of the great country hotels, the Sevenhill Pub. Not only has it won the Best Country Dining Award at the last two AHA Awards, it also has one of the greatest pub cellars in Australia.

On Monday morning, soak in your surrounds and take your time getting back to town. With so many amazing wineries in such a small area, drop into one or two on the way home. You won't regret it.

For a long weekend adventure that really has it all and showcases everything that is great about our state, do yourselves a favour and head north for the Jamestown Cup.
