Naracoorte Cup Preview

We’re getting to the business end of the Limestone Coast Cup Series with Sunday’s Naracoorte Cup the fifth race of the seven leg series. A field of ten horses are set to line up in Sunday’s Cup with runners from all over South Australia and interstate looking to add some silverware to their trophy cabinets.

Series leader Pass The Glass has claimed two legs of the Series winning both the Bordertown Cup in December and their Summer Cup over the Australia Day Long Weekend. A win here on Sunday would almost see the mare wrap up the Series and all signs point to her running another big race. The mare is undefeated at two starts over the 2000m at Naracoorte and she’ll be partnered again by Paul Gatt who has steered her to her last two victories. While she rises in weight, she easily put away a similar field last start by over four lengths.

Coonawarra Vignerons Cup winner Mista Holyfield sits second on the Limestone Coast Cup Series standings and was given every chance last start at Bordertown but was run down late. He rises in the weights after that run which probably doesn’t help him and barrier eleven isn’t overly ideal either but the Richard Wilson stable always present their runners in fantastic order and have been enjoying a lot of success of late. Apprentice Lachie Neindorf is flying and will give this runner every chance on Sunday.

Ten-year-old Flow Meter showed there is still plenty of life left in him, winning last weekend’s Strathalbyn Cup at start number 128. The old timer has been a model of consistency of late, only finishing outside the top five on one occasion in his last ten starts. He seems to have a great relationship with jockey Sairyn Fawke and has to be respected after winning a strong edition of the Strathalbyn Cup last weekend.

Snoano will be fronting up in his fifth straight Country Cup after running in four across the border over the last three months. Aaron Purcell is a very astute trainer and will no doubt believe his eight-year-old can win on Sunday. He’s a horse that likes to lead and will need to jump well from barrier seven. Melissa Julius has been in good form, winning four of her last twenty starts and will ensure that the rest of the field have something to chase down.

Trainer Sue Murphy has elected not to claim on her top weight on Sunday, instead backing in senior jockey Dom Tourneur to get the job done on Naseeb. The locally trained gelding had plenty of success in town in December, winning his two starts at Morphettville over the mile. He’s only race twice over the mile and this will be his first attempt at the 2000m. If he can get the distance and bring his form from town he’s going to be mighty hard to beat.

Impulse Diavolo loves Naracoorte, winning here in two of his last five starts. The gelding will have start number 50 on Sunday and has been in fantastic form for trainer Steven Tootell. He got too far back last start in the Bordertown Summer Cup and had no chance of running down Pass the Glass. If he can settle a bit closer on Sunday look for him to storm home late.
