Balaklava’s back on track, baby

The Balaklava Racing Club’s 2020 Adelaide Plains Cup meeting this Sunday will be a special day – for two reasons.

Firstly, the club’s traditional launch meeting for the calendar year will double as an unveiling of the renovated track, which has been out of action since November.

Club CEO Doug Hall says the renovated surface will complement what looms as ideal weather and solid fields for the meeting.

“The weather’s looking really good, and while the first run of nominations were a bit light, but they’ve increased, so the fields look okay,” Doug said.

“The track and grounds look fantastic, so I’m very happy heading into the meeting.”
Doug says the club has worked hard on the track over the past few months.

“We did extensive work on it after our last meeting last year,” he said.

“We took out a lot of bad soil, down to a depth of about a metre, over quite a big area on the turn, and re-sodded it.

“There was a bit of a big infestation as well, which is all under control now.

“The track’s really good, it’s come back well – probably the best I’ve ever seen it.”

In keeping with the club’s tradition, Sunday’s Adelaide Plains Cup is a family-orientated event, featuring children’s entertainment and more.

However, the 2020 event will be stand out for another reason.

“It’s going to be a special day for us, because it’ll be the last race meeting that our long-serving current chairman, Wayne Hensen, resides over,” Doug said.

“We’ll make a bit of presentation, and generally make a bit of a fuss over him too.”

Race 1 on the seven-race card is scheduled for 1.30pm, with the Coopers Adelaide Plains Cup set down for 3.50pm.
