Dare to Dream syndicate’s Spirits high after breakthrough

After watching seven mostly excellent, but frustrating runs, members of a Dare To Dream syndicate were finally able to celebrate last weekend.

At her eighth career start, Daily Spirit broke her maiden in emphatic style at Morphettville.

Trained by Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas, the three-year-old filly romped to a 1.3-length win in a $37,000, 1200m maiden event, prompting celebrations – and relief – among the Miracle Mile syndicate.

“Yep, pop the corks,” said syndicate manager Katrina Robson.

“We were pretty excited that finally we got there.”

Daily Spirit is part of Racing SA’s Dare to Dream initiative, which gave 25 competition winners a chance to experience racehorse ownership via a share in two horses for themselves and nine friends.

Horses were spread across local stables and despite only breaking into the winners’ circle last weekend, Daily Spirit has been among the most consistent Dare To Dream performers to date.

“I was just on Messenger just now talking to someone about it,” Katrina said.

“We’ve had a bit of bad luck with the horses we’ve had so far, so you don’t want to get your hopes up too much. But it was great to win on Saturday.”

Prior to Saturday’s win, Daily Spirit had placed at six of her seven starts, behind the likes of All Banter and Instant Celebrity, and only missed out in a $100,000 two-year-old race at Murray Bridge last July.

Co-trainer Andrew Gluyas noted the daughter of Zebedee had been “favourite about four times I think”.

“I think she jumped favourite again…” Andrew told Racing.com’s Terry McAuliffe post-race.

“The way the race panned out it worked out well for her (and) she hit the line strong, although just for a little bit there we thought we might get run down.

“But it didn’t happen, so yeah, it’s wonderful.”

Andrew said the Dare To Dream factor made the win a little more special.

“We’ve got a lot of people involved,” he said.

“It’s a good initiative and it’s great that this horse has won, finally.”
