SA 2YO primed to tackle Victorian raiders

Richard Jolly is confident promising two-year-old Karacasu can mix it with his Victorian rivals in Saturday’s Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville.

The son of Headwater goes into the feature four weeks between runs after he was impressive when defeating Brother’s Shadow at Morphettville on March 27.

“He’s good. It’s a month between runs but he’s had quiet barrier trial in between and had a good gallop on Tuesday,” Jolly said.

“I couldn’t be happier with him and he keeps improving.”

Just how far Karacasu can go remains to be seen, but Jolly said the youngster had always given both him and co-training daughter Chantelle the impression he could be competitive in some good races in time.

“He’s certainly up to this grade… what the future holds who knows,” Jolly said.

“He’s always let down like an above-average horse. He’s a big mature horse, he’s got some filling out to do, but who knows where the future is with him.”

And being a product of the Magic Millions, Jolly said beyond the spring the stable may look at taking the horse to Queensland in the new year.

“He’ll spell for the spring, but also being a Magic Millions horse we’d have to think about going up there for that 1400m three-year-old race,” Jolly said.

“That’s something he might be able to get to down the track, but there a couple of nice races here for him before then.”

Jolly said Regalo De Gaetano, who has been freshened following his run in the All-Star Mile, was targeting the R A Lee Stakes at Morphettville on Goodwood Day.

“He had a tough run over there and had 10 days in the paddock to get over it,” Jolly said.

“His goal is the (R A) Lee Stakes. He’s galloped well, but 1400m on the Parks might be a task for him.

“He’s got a few things against him, but I think he’ll run well.”

The stable will also saddle up Montepulciano in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes late in the day and Jolly said it looked a strong race on paper.

“It’s a competitive looking year for those horses,” Jolly said.

“We’re happy with him, but he’s going to have to lift a cog to be beating some of them looking at the form.”

And he said stable star Kemalpasa – being aimed at the Group 1 Goodwood on May 15 – had come through his impressive Irwin Stakes win last weekend without a hitch.

”He came through that well,” Jolly said.

“I’ll decide next week if we ask for a gallop between races or search or a trial, but he’s pulled-up in really good order.”
