Great Leveller waiting until Wednesday

Jon O’Connor will wait until Sandown on Wednesday to chase a third successive win with Great Leveller, who was set to make his Melbourne debut at Flemington on Saturday.

O’Connor said the horse had a minor setback with a hoof issue which will see him remain in Adelaide to recover before heading east.

“He actually just has a small quarter crack – it’s almost right, but we’ll wait now and run him at Sandown on Wednesday,” O’Connor said.

O’Connor is hoping for a change of fortune after a luckless Adelaide Racing Carnival where talented filly Smokin’ Val finished runner-up in the Redelva Stakes and fifth behind Beau Rossa in the Group 2 Tobin Bronze, before another solid effort in the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes behind Brooklyn Hustle on Goodwood Day.

“It was a little bit frustrating,” O’Connor said.

“You could argue from a good gate she could have won the Redelva and from a good gate she could have won the Tobin Bronze…

“I couldn’t be happier with how she stood up in those races, but it’s frustrating to not get the rewards. She ran her heart out the little thing.”

Despite her luckless carnival O’Connor said the stable could now look towards the 2022 Adelaide Racing Carnival knowing it has a filly capable of mixing it with the better horses.

“She’ll be back for our carnival next year,” O’Connor said.

“In the Redelva she beat home Instant Celebrity, who proved that form in the Sangster and Goodwood.

“We’ll try and have a little look in the spring in Melbourne, but long term aim her at next year’s carnival and a race like the Sangster.”

O’Connor has five acceptors at Murray Bridge but could be left with three runners as Left Hand Man is also heading to Melbourne and Covered Call is an emergency.

“Left Hand Man is going to Melbourne and will run at Sandown on Sunday,” O’Connor said.

“Akkacan rarely wins, but he rarely doesn’t run top four either. Our Deep Agenda looks a chance and hopefully Bartender Blues can run well and I have a nice race picked out for him in a couple of weeks’ time.”
