Champion jockey joins Racing SA team

Racing SA is thrilled to announce the appointment of former Australian champion jockey Clare Lindop to the organisation, in the new role of Industry Development and Training Officer.

As a former stablehand, apprentice jockey, track work rider, jockey’s association director and Group 1 winning jockey, Clare brings with her first hand insights into racing career pathways and rider development.

Upon retiring from racing Clare went on to gain a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment with the ultimate aim to work for the racing industry in a different capacity. Clare has also gained invaluable business experience following her appointment as Elected Council Member for the City of Holdfast Bay.

Racing SA CEO Nick Redin said the South Australian industry would benefit from Ms Lindop’s appointment.

"The core of our strategic plan is to increase the horse population by 300 horses over the next 3 years. Every four new horses in the racing industry creates the equivalent of a full time job. We need people to fill the jobs these horses will create, as well as those already on offer. This role will be crucial in identifying talent and filling in the shortage we currently have with track work riders and stable staff in particular.

“One of Racing SA’s key areas of focus moving forward is to encourage people to consider thoroughbred racing as a career choice through highlighting the job opportunities and career pathways that exist within racing.

“What better way to explain racing and attract people to our industry than by having one of South Australia’s brightest sporting stars to represent us.”

Clare was the first ever Australian female jockey to ride in the Melbourne Cup (2003) and to win a Group 1 race (2006 Adelaide Cup, Exalted Time). Clare has ridden 1432 career winners, including four at Group 1 level and over 50 Black Type races.

In her new role, Ms Lindop will visit schools and work with their career counsellors to explain the thoroughbred racing industry and the career pathways and job opportunities within it, as well as working closely with Equestrian SA and Pony Clubs across the state to help identify potential talent that may be suited to a career within racing.

Ms Lindop is excited to join the team and looks forward to being involved once again in an industry that she loves.

“To have the opportunity to promote our industry and encourage people to consider thoroughbred racing in South Australia as a career choice, and to ultimately help grow racing’s workforce is a challenge I’m looking forward to.

I started my riding career at pony club level and ended up riding in races at the highest level possible in Australia and around the world; so to be able to help people reach their potential by developing both their passion for horses and skills in racing is exciting.”

Ms Lindop will commence in the role on Monday 28 June.
