Doudle's stayer shines again, Eaton regains premiership lead

The best is still in front of Travis Doudle’s exciting stayer Not Usual Glorious.

Unbeaten in three Australian starts and thriving on a rain soaked Morphettville surface on Saturday, the former New Zealand stayer could be an Adelaide Cup contender in 2022.

It was another polished performance where he was able to sit off the speed and grind down Lord Bouzeron in the straight with Paul Gatt in the saddle, Doudle believing the decision to hold the horse back before kicking of his Australian career the right one.

“He’s been out here a little while but we didn’t want to kick him off too early and waited until the tracks were more suitable,’’ Doudle said.

“You never know, he could develop into an Adelaide Cup horse,’’ he said.

Jess Eaton was back in the winner’s stall winning the opening race aboard promising two-year-old Taunting to regain the lead over Todd Pannell in the Metro Riding Premiership by one, while Jason Holder and Barend Vorster shared riding honours with a double.

Holder scored early in the day aboard Winning Weather, giving Hall of Fame trainer Leon Macdonald some get well news while in hospital recovering from a broken hip. Holder also booted home the Gordon Richards-trained Turfitt, while Vorster was victorious aboard Aadelad and Frankie Pinot, who maintained his perfect record at Morphettville with a fast finishing win in testing conditions for the Tony and Calvin McEvoy stable.

Across the border SA enjoyed success at Ballarat on Friday with some astute placement from David Jolly helping bold front running mare Trip return to the winner’s circle.

While star jockey Jamie Kah moved within four of the magical 100-win mark on the Melbourne Rider’s Premiership with a victory in the final race of the day at Caulfield aboard Pintoff for Richard Cully.
