Thorough Care pack proves popular for retired racehorses

Retired racehorses across South Australia are being spotted in their Caribu Alpine rugs following a strong uptake in the Retired Racehorse Assistance Packages being provided by Thorough Care SA.

Fandango, Can’t Bluff Me, Thistles and My Prayer are just some of the retired racehorses who have appreciated the rugs on SA’s cooler mornings.

In fact, since launching last month, Thorough Care SA – the welfare arm of Racing SA – has sent close to 60 of the special packages out to retired racehorse owners across the state.

The packs were launched in partnership with Hygain and PETstock Assist as part of a shared commitment to caring for thoroughbreds before, during and beyond their racetrack careers.

The union between the three organisations is designed to encourage people to consider taking a retired thoroughbred racehorse and help relieve some of the initial and ongoing costs involved.

Valued at approximately $600, the package is still available to all South Australian thoroughbred racehorses transitioning into retirement, with anyone who takes a horse from the track or one of SA’s acknowledged re-trainers able to apply.

The special package includes:

  • Supplements, feed and on-going nutritional support courtesy of Hygain and Racing SA
  • A Caribu Alpine Rug courtesy of PETstock Assist and Racing SA

The application form for the Retired Thoroughbred Racehorse Assistance Package can be accessed via the Racing SA website here
