Savatoxl starts spring in Schillaci Stakes

Group 1 Goodwood winner Savatoxl kicks off his Melbourne Spring Carnival in Saturday’s $300,000 Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy stable have their sights on the Group 1 Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley - a race they won twice with Hey Doc - with the former top end galloper. Savatoxl hasn’t raced since running down the track behind Tofane on the Group 1 Stradbroke at Eagle Farm back in June.

“The Manikato is his target,’’ Calvin McEvoy said.

The stable opted against running last-start Balaklava Cup winner Winning Partner in Group 1 Toorak Handicap, the horse instead set to chase more country cup success.

“He’s in the Seymour Cup at Ballarat on Sunday, but that will depend on the weather,’’ McEvoy said.

“Other options are the Murray Bridge Cup (which he won last year) and the Cranbourne Cup,’’ he said.

Fellow SA gallopers Mongolian Marshal, Magna Bella and Worsfold are also acceptors in the Ballarat feature.
