Melbourne Cup dream alive for Hasta La War

Hasta La War will try and use the Group 2 Herbert Power as a launching pad to the race that stops a nation when he makes his Melbourne debut on Saturday.

Trainer Sue Murphy and connections a chasing a dream Melbourne Cup spot with the South-East stayer who missed last week’s Group 3 Bart Cummings at Flemington as an emergency.

The biggest challenge for Murphy will be the fact she can’t travel to Melbourne with the impressive last-start Adelaide winner.

“He’ll go to Horsham tomorrow and spend the night there before going to Melbourne,’’ Murphy said.

“His work here on Tuesday here at the track was terrific.

“The horse is well. Now we get to see where he sits in scheme of things,’’ she said.

Hasta La War will try and emulate the feat of Alcopop who won the Herbert Power in 2009 for Jake Stephens before going on to famously run favourite in the Melbourne Cup won by Shocking.

Hasta La War is perfectly draw in barrier three with Linda Meech to ride.
