Opperman heads interstate with Royal Mile

The Victorian border has opened at an opportune time for leading SA apprentice Jacob Opperman.

The Mount Gambier-based rider will be able to head to Melbourne on Saturday with Royal Mile, the horse that has helped shape his early career, for the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes at Caulfield.

Royal Mile and Opperman enjoyed a brilliant Adelaide Racing Carnival winning the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas and Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes, before running fifth in the Group 1 SA Derby behind Explosive Jack.

They were back in winning form second-up from a spell at Morphettville earlier this month and trainer Lee Creek is confident the pair will acquit themselves well in Melbourne.

“Nothing worries Jacob,’’ Opperman said.

“He might be 18 but he has been around for a while, that’s what I really like about him, he has a calm head for such a young lad,’’ he said.

Opperman said the Eclipse had been Royal Mile's target following the Derby back in May.

“This is the race we set him for,’’ Opperman said.

“And the border has opened at the perfect time.

“He gets in well down in the weights and I am sure he will run well,’’ he said.
